English Book Sales
One of the ways that we raise funds is by selling English books
Whilst I realise that a lot of people read on their electronic devices now, I firmly believe there is nothing like owning a shelf, or bookcase of well loved books and I know that I’m not alone in that thought.
How Our Growing Book Department Began
Several years ago we were donated a lot of books from a book shop that was closing down. We knew they would be a steady fundraiser but what was the best way to approach it. Books are heavy and taking them to markets for a couple of hours was hard work.
It was too complicated to let people come to the house to browse the books and selling them on general selling groups wasn’t easy either. They got lost amongst the other goods for sale.
I had what I thought was a brainwave and In December 2021, I started a Facebook group specifically for selling English books. They were instantly easer to find.

The group is open to anyone to buy & sell. However most of the books on there are for sale by Algarve Emporium Charity at very reasonable prices. The majority of books are priced at 1€ for fiction and 3€ for non fiction and biographies.
I sell to people in the Algarve who can collect at local points and I also sell to people and post to them. We send upto 2kg of books to anywhere in Portugal for just 2.50€ post and packing.
The group has become a great success with a steady turnover but the books were coming in faster than they are going out.
I then received an amazing offer from the manageress of The Food Co Portimão.
We currently have a table of books for sale in the front of the shop, next to the entrance. Our table is there from 9th November to 30th November.
It is proving to be a great success and there are new titles on the table most days, offered at a suggested donation of 1€ per book. New stock was taken to the shop yesterday. Why not pop in and see if we have what you are looking for?
I send a Massive thank you to Julie Davis and her team at The Food Co, Portimão and to Sarah and Scott Haywood, members of Algarve Emporium volunteers team for looking after the table and making sure it is well stocked.
