Book Event

I’ve recently written a blog about how helpful The Food Co (previously known as Overseas Supermarket & Iceland) is to Algarve Emporium Charity and many other charities too.

This is an update of the previous blog detailing our last Book Sale at the Portimāo store.

We were allowed to place a table at the front of the supermarket, near the tills, between 2nd to 30th of May.

We took 3 car loads of books to the store throughput that time and other people donated books to the table too.

There was a wide choice of genre: adult and children’s fiction, text books, references books and non fiction across many topics.

The table was there throughout the opening hours of the shop with an honesty tin, customers were invited to make a 1€, donation per book.

Our Portimāo volunteers, Sarah and Scott Haywood visited the store from time to time to tidy and restock the table.

The staff of The Food Co in Portimão for helping by keeping a watchful eye and topping up the table when stock were low

Finally it was all the wonderful customers who bought the books as spent a total of 586€ between them.

This money will be spent on food for the struggling families that we help in Tunes. Fresh meat, onions, carrots, potatoes, apples and eggs are bought every Friday morning. This is added to the pre prepared bags of staple foods and distributed to the registered families every Friday between 11.30 and 12.00.

We invite you to visit us at Between the Lines Bar in Tunes on a Friday to be introduced to the team and see exactly how the money is spent. No need to pre arrange, just come and say hello to the team. If you arrive at 11 you will see us setting up and then we can take you behind the counter before we start distributing the food.
